MESH Report 5/28/19

From Captain Sarah Kravits:

It was a great day for vegetarians (and other fans of good food) on Tuesday night at the Carol Starr MESH cafe at Shomrei. Chef Arden Epstein made a delicious vegetarian meal starting with an appetizer of watermelon, mozzarella, tomato, and basil with pita chips; then moving on to a green salad with ranch dressing; featuring a main course of polenta with cheese served with black beans and corn and tortilla chips; and ending with refreshing ice cream sandwiches.

Twenty-four guests enjoyed the meal and left with two granola bars each for the road. Although three additional guests were not able to be accommodated, they were given takeaway boxes with salad, lentil soup, and chips.

It was an all-Orange crew in the house at MESH tonight — along with Chef Arden (South Orange), Sarah Kravits captained West Orange teens Louis, Kendall, Max, and Zaniyah who kept everything moving in the kitchen as well as in the “front of the house.” Several leftover fresh vegetable items from the refrigerator were repurposed for the salad, as was the lentil soup which came in handy for the extra guests.

As always, we were grateful to work alongside the capable and seasoned MESH crew of Adrienne, Joe, and Darin.

About MESH:

The Carol Starr MESH Cafe at Shomrei (Montclair Emergency Services for the Homeless) is a cooperative effort between the MESH organization and local synagogues and churches.  Volunteers at each institution cook and serve hearty, nutritious meals for the hungry. Shomrei’s turn is on Tuesday nights. A good meal, and perhaps as important, social interaction and companionship offer respite to those who need it. Please help fulfill this crucial mitzvah by volunteering.
