Lifelong Learning at Shomrei
Education is a lifelong journey. Our adult education programs provide a dynamic selection of studies for those eager to learn. Explore a diverse range of Jewish learning opportunities offered annually or regularly at Shomrei, led by clergy, guest teachers, or members of our community. All levels of Judaic knowledge are welcome.
Visitors are welcome! Some of our ongoing programs include:
Torah Study (year-round)
On Shabbat mornings before the service, we gather to explore the weekly Parashah (Torah portion). These discussions are primarily lay-led, with occasional insights from Rabbi Julie and guest teachers. Because it's early, members enter building with their key fob. Visitors are welcome, but please contact the office, before Saturday, to arrange entry.
Divrei Torah, Sermons & Featured Talks (year-round)
Our Torah service on Saturday mornings begins with an introduction to the week’s Parashah (Torah portion) by Rabbi Julie or a member of the congregation. Sometimes there will also be a sermon or a special talk from Rabbi Julie, a guest Rabbi, or an invited speaker after the Torah reading.
Lunchtime Learning the Rabbi (Oct - May)
Embark on a journey of learning with Rabbi Julie. Held mostly on the third Wednesday of each month, the group explores foundational concepts of Judaism and Jewish Life. Bring your own dairy or parve lunch and enjoy a nourishing discussion.
Shabbat Morning Parent Class (Oct - May)
Explore Life's Big Questions with Rabbi Julie. This class is for parents with children in school.
Shomrei Reads (year-round)
Lay-led discussions about books or other texts scheduled every 4-6 weeks. Connect over a shared reading experience on Sunday mornings or weekday evenings.
Midday MeetUp (Oct - May)
A monthly gathering to make connections and learn together over a catered (free) lunch. Held mostly on the second Tuesday of each month, the program provides a range of featured speakers on varied topics.
Mussar Study Project (Oct - May)
A lay-led group that meets monthly to promote character development through the study and cultivation of moral traits (such as patience, compassion, trust, and mindful speech).
Talmud Tuesdays (occasional, Oct - May)
Join Guest Teacher Jacob Lipkin on Tuesday evenings for a lively discussion focused on passages from this masterpiece of ancient Rabbinic Judaism.
Guest Scholars (varried dates)
Several times a year, we invite a guest scholar to Shomrei to provide an additional learning opportunity on Shabbat, on Sunday or a weeknight evening.
Additional Classes
We also offer a variety of courses and other learning opportunities throughout the year taught by our Rabbi, members of the congregation or invited teachers.
