Defending Pharaoh: An English Major Interprets the Exodus Story


We often think of the Exodus story in terms of good and evil. God is good. Pharaoh is evil. God heard the moaning of the Israelite slaves and remembered His covenant. He liberated them from their bondage telling Moses “Say, therefore, to the Israelite people: I am יהוה. I will free you from the labors of the Egyptians and deliver you from their bondage. I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and through extraordinary chastisements. And I will take you to be My people, and I will be your God. And you shall know that I, יהוה, am your God who freed you from the labors of the Egyptians.” (Exodus, Chapter 6 v 6-7) bringing them out of Egypt. (more…)

JLC Shabbaton

This past Shabbat, students in grades 5-7 had the unique opportunity to spend the weekend at the Isabella Freedman Jewish Retreat Center in Falls Village, CT. Thanks to a generous grant from the Greater MetroWest Federation, JLC students departed Montclair on Friday afternoon and enjoyed a Shabbat retreat amidst the serene beauty of the Berkshire Mountains, fully immersed in nature. Accompanied by JLC staff members Sarah Kamenetsky and Orli Pinsberg, as well as Madrichim Eva Halbfinger and Gabe Delaney, the group embarked on a memorable and enriching experience.

Jewish India

At one time, there were 40,000 Jews in India. Today there are less than 4000, most having made aliyah to Israel in the 1950s after the establishment of the State of Israel and in the face of uncertainty about their fate in the newly independent state of India. On our recent trip to India, we visited synagogues in three principal areas – Mumbai (west coast of central India), Kolkata (east coast of central India) and Cochin (southern coast). (more…)
