Bring on the Beans

I didn’t grow up eating beans – except as part of the Chile con Carne recipe my mother used to make (a recipe from the year my parents lived in Mexico). And they are still not something I tend to make on a regular basis.

There are, however, lots of reasons to eat more beans. They are a great source of protein, as I keep reading about. They are better for the planet – using less water and land than meat and poultry.

Mostly, though, they are really tasty and a great choice for those hot summer days when I don’t feel like standing over a hot stove or having a hot meal. They are also quick to make if you use canned beans. (more…)

Obituary for Bruce Baff

Bruce Baff, a long-time marketing and advertising executive and travel writer for Jewish publications, passed away on June 11, 2025, at the age of 86. Bruce was the beloved husband of Natalie Goulston Baff, to whom he was married for 53 years, a loving father to his daughter Arlene Yoskowitz and his son, Adam Baff and his wife, Maia, and the adored grandfather of grandchildren Sivan, Eden, Golan, Eli and Owen. Studying with my Havruta

What little Jewish education I had when I was a kid mostly went in one ear and out the other. When I joined Shomrei in middle age, I decided to up my Jewish literacy. I attended Rabbi Greenstein’s Sunday Talmud class. I enjoyed it, but I was looking for an approach to learning that was a bit more interactive. Would Rabbi Greenstein teach me one-on-one? No, he wouldn’t do that, but he did recommend I find myself a havruta – a study partner —  through a program called Project Zug. (more…)
