Last night, the Carol Starr MESH Cafe at Shomrei played host to 25 appreciative guests. With Tu Bishvat having been celebrated the day before, our meal reflected the tradition of eating fruits and nuts generally, and the seven species mentioned in the Torah specifically: wheat, barley, grapes, figs, pomegranates, olives, and dates.
Master Chef Aileen Grossberg presided. The meal began with barley salad with figs and apples and Israeli salad repurposed from the preceding Shabbat kiddush. Then, guests were treated to a delicious main course of orange ginger salmon, cabbage, and carrots in tin-foil packets, green beans, bread and butter, and 7-species noodle kugel. Finishing off the meal was a dessert course of cranberry orange biscotti and fresh fruit plate.
The role of Aileen’s sous-chef was ably performed by Lynne Kurzweil. Dishwasher extraordinaire was Susan Rosenblatt. And the meal was served by super-duper teen volunteers Jonathan, Jordana, and Jahiaida. MESH staffers Bonny, Joe, and Rev also contributed. The result was another welcoming, healthy, and efficiently-executed meal at the MESH cafe.
About MESH:
The Carol Starr MESH Cafe at Shomrei (Montclair Emergency Services for the Homeless) is a cooperative effort between the MESH organization and local synagogues and churches. Volunteers at each institution cook and serve hearty, nutritious meals for the hungry. Shomrei’s turn is on Tuesday nights. A good meal, and perhaps as important, social interaction and companionship offer respite to those who need it. Please help fulfill this crucial mitzvah by volunteering.
