MESH Report for June 10, 2025
On a beautiful late spring afternoon, Aileen Grossberg led an experienced team of MESH cooks. The kitchen hummed with activity as Sarah and Charles Steindel, Lou Hammerman and Susan Rosenblatt chopped, measured, and stirred.
The menu had an international flair starting with crudités and hummus. The main course consisted of a generous portion chili con carne over baked rice using meat left over from our last barbecue. (Don’t worry. the meat had been frozen.) Tortilla chips to crumble over the chili, a piece of cornbread and a hamburger bun transformed into garlic bread rounded out the entree.
Dessert was a banana and a chocolate roll. Vegan and vegetarians had almost the same meal but roasted tofu substituted for the meat. The crew packed up the bags and the Steindels delivered the still hot food to the waiting guests along with some extra rice.
The Carol Starr MESH Cafe at Shomrei (Montclair Emergency Services for Hope) is a cooperative effort between the MESH organization and local synagogues and churches.

Shomrei provides 50 meals to MESH on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of each month. We need volunteers to help prepare and pack the food.
For those interested in volunteering who are not available on Tuesday afternoons, we are brainstorming different ways to make it work. Let us know what would work for you.
Additionally, each Monday afternoon, we deliver any usable food leftover from Kiddish to MESH.
Volunteer at the MESH Site
Volunteers are also welcome to help serve food 6 nights a week, Monday through Saturday, 4:30-6:30 pm at the MESH site, 619 Bloomfield Ave, Montclair.
