A New Year of Learning

Dear Parents of K-1 JLC students,

Shana Tova! Happy New Year and Chag Sukkot Sameach! I’m excited to have the new year of learning start and to get to know your children. We had two wonderful classes so far, and I am looking forward to spending time getting to know you and your children at Shomrei this year.

I will incorporate key vocabulary words, in both Hebrew and English, throughout the year to introduce concepts related to the holidays and help the children become more familiar with Hebrew letters and their sounds.

Our first class was right before Rosh Hashanah. We introduced ourselves and became familiar with some of the learning materials we would use during the year. The children made lovely cards for their families with colorful apple and honey stickers for a sweet new year. Many of the words they’ll see are in English and Hebrew. We talked about going to synagogue with our families and hearing the shofar blast. We had so much to talk and learn about in our next class! There are three holidays in succession, and we covered them all! We read a book “Red Blue and Yellow Yarn” A Tale of Forgiveness, by Miriam R Kosman. The children enjoyed decorating a child size sukkah with stickers and branches on top. We looked at people celebrating with Torahs and talked about how special the scrolls are. We rolled out a homemade Torah and placed pictures of Torah stories along it. We decorated a shiny breastplate and crowns for the Torah. We will be referring to the parsha of the week as it is appropriate, when we come back for our next class.

As you can see we’re off to a great start. We will meet again October 14. I’m looking forward to meeting you at JLC back to school night October 23, from 8-9pm. Enjoy the upcoming celebrations!

Chag Sameach!
