To Begin Again–a Poem

Present at Creation, only God can begin
His people must begin again
And again And again

We cannot accept imposed ending
Thrown down, we get up
And do it again

When the Second Temple fell
Jews embraced the Book
Facing extinction, they found beginning

And so I emerged from the mikvah
My regeneration
A place to begin

Confronting calamity and injustice
We defy God and fate
To begin again
