Rishon: Israel Experiences in the Classroom

In the past few months, the JLC students participated in activities about different topics connected to Israel. I focused on things that the students probably don’t about in Israel. For instance: What a day of an Israeli kid their age looks like? How are Jewish holidays celebrated in Israel? Why Israel is called the “Start-up nation”?

Moreover, the topics are things that will make the students more curiously about Israel, and encourage them ask more questions. We learn about places in Israel and what is special about them including Jerusalem, Tel Aviv and main places on the map of Israel. Israeli inventions and patents that we all use in our life and even don’t know about it are other topics we learn about.

During these activities I combine the subjects, and my personal story, that relate to me as an Israeli. Like, the Israeli Scouts (In Hebrew- “Tzofim”), the youth movement that I have been a member since I was a kid and more Israeli experiences as part of the activities.

    Sara is the Director of the Shomrei JLC (Jewish Learning Center - Hebrew School). She comes to Shomrei with over 15 years experience in Experiential Jewish Education, teaching in synagogue schools, working for Camp Ramah and in many roles in United Synagogue Youth. She brings a love of Jewish learning and infuses her Ruach in her work. She has a Masters of Social Work from Yeshiva University where she developed a love of modern Jewish Philosophy. She is an alum of the Nativ College Leadership Program in Israel, the Conservative movement’s gap year program.
