JLC Makes Meaning through Matzah
On Wed, March 29th, the JLC enjoyed a visit from the Matzah Factory. Our social hall was transformed into an actual matzah bakery, and students learned how to make matzah from scratch.
They began by rolling the wheat between their hands, to produce seeds. The seeds were collected and ground into flour, and then the 18 minute timer began. This simple, 2-ingredient Passover staple (water and flour) must be made within the short time frame of 18 minutes, to ensure the dough does not ferment.
Our JLC students were up for the challenge! After they kneaded the dough, they rolled it out flat and pricked holes in it, before getting it into the oven.
There was a unanimous vote that warm, freshly baked matzah tastes so much better than the boxed kind! It is certain that this hands-on experience will stick with our students for years to come!
