MESH Report 4/9/2019
Report from Captain Fern Heinig:
Another week, another full house at the Carol Starr MESH Cafe. We served 24 in house guests and one takeaway.
The weather began dry, but quickly turned to rain around 6:00pm so we allowed our guests to come inside early and be seated. We had enough helpers so the professional MESH staff kept our guests company in the gallery as we finished preparing dinner.
Chef Fern had an able team of adult and teen prep cooks/servers/dish washers to insure an easy service and kitchen clean up. Dinner was a previous month’s request of fresh baked Salmon with yogurt/dill sauce (tzatziki) accompanied by very creamy mashed potatoes and steamed string beans. Our guests began the meal with a springy feel of fruit salad followed by spinach salad. Dessert was cookies and tangerines. We did have one vegetarian who did not eat fish (whom I had met the previous day in the streets of Montclair so I knew he was coming – I bought vegetarian puffs for him).
I want to thank our helpers who have become monthly regulars, even though they are non Shomrei members. Thank you Sienna, Meg, Kal, Orley, Holly, Jeff, Tracie, and Patrick. Shomrei member Matt also joined us to round out a star team. Professional MESH staff Bonny and Adrienne took charge of dining room with two security staff.
About MESH:
The Carol Starr MESH Cafe at Shomrei (Montclair Emergency Services for the Homeless) is a cooperative effort between the MESH organization and local synagogues and churches. Volunteers at each institution cook and serve hearty, nutritious meals for the hungry. Shomrei’s turn is on Tuesday nights. A good meal, and perhaps as important, social interaction and companionship offer respite to those who need it. Please help fulfill this crucial mitzvah by volunteering.
