MESH Report 5/14/19

From Captain Shirley Grill:

Tuesday night was a cold and rainy night–not your typical spring evening!  Because of the weather, we let our guests in early rather than have them wait outside in the rain.  We were fortunate that the meal was a spinoff from our wonderful Syrian meal the prior Friday, so much of the work was reheating and cutting and chopping for a fresh green salad and fruit salad.

We introduced a new volunteer to MESH, Chaya Kotlowitz, who served as Chef Aileen’s sous chef.  Great to have Chaya join the experienced team of Aileen Grossberg, Susan Rosenblatt and our teen, Orly.  We were ably supported by the MESH team of Adrienne and Bonny.  We served 24 people and 2 take-aways.

Our fabulously, exotic menu consisted of the following:
Appetizer: hummus, babaganoush, carrots and pita
Garden Salad
Main: Baked Salmon with Syrian spices, Rice, Roasted Zucchini and Tomatoes
Desert: Syrian desert, crumb cake, fruit salad and a mandarin orange to take home

Our guests thoroughly enjoyed the meal and the respite from the rain!

About MESH:

The Carol Starr MESH Cafe at Shomrei (Montclair Emergency Services for the Homeless) is a cooperative effort between the MESH organization and local synagogues and churches.  Volunteers at each institution cook and serve hearty, nutritious meals for the hungry. Shomrei’s turn is on Tuesday nights. A good meal, and perhaps as important, social interaction and companionship offer respite to those who need it. Please help fulfill this crucial mitzvah by volunteering.
