MESH Report 6/4/19
From Captain Lynne Kurzweil:
The Carol Starr MESH Cafe at Shomrei welcomed a full house of 24 grateful guests this past Tuesday night. Four additional hungry guests were given takeaway meals. As we were about to say the motzi, one young woman raised her hand, stood up and said she would like to lead the blessing. She proceeded to recite “Baruch Ata Adon…” and then in English, both with perfect precision, as she has heard each week at our cafe. My heart warmed at her sincerity.
Chef Lynne was able to repurpose most of the leftovers from Saturday’s gourmet kiddush. First course was smoked salmon canapés with herbed cream cheese on water crackers (not your typical MESH starter). A green salad was served with the main course of Tilapia with Roasted Tomatoes and Black Olives, and Herbed Brown Rice Pilaf with Roasted Vegetables and a buttered roll. Dessert was Strawberries and Kiwi alongside a slice of Celebration Cake and a mini Brownie. Seconds were given out and not a smidgen remained. Teen sous chef, Jonah, assisted with great skill. Shomrei MESH super volunteer, Susan Rosenblatt, was helpful in all tasks, as always, including the tedious job of dish, pan and utensil washing. Our top team of MESH staffers, Bonny, Adrienne and Joe, always ensure that all runs smoothly.
We were a skeleton crew but we pulled it off without a hitch. Our guests left the building with full stomachs and high spirits. Three more weeks until we break for the summer so check the signup and make sure you get in one more mitzvah before the summer.
About MESH:
The Carol Starr MESH Cafe at Shomrei (Montclair Emergency Services for the Homeless) is a cooperative effort between the MESH organization and local synagogues and churches. Volunteers at each institution cook and serve hearty, nutritious meals for the hungry. Shomrei’s turn is on Tuesday nights. A good meal, and perhaps as important, social interaction and companionship offer respite to those who need it. Please help fulfill this crucial mitzvah by volunteering.
