MESH Report 6/18/19
From Captain Shirley Grill:
It was a stormy, wet night on Tuesday so we invited our MESH guests into Shomrei early to provide sanctuary from the storm! We had a full house with 24 guests and 5 takeaway dinners. The evening was brightened by Chef Arden Epstein’s fare, in colors of red and green…rather spring like! Appetizer was fresh cherries and nuts–can be seen in forefront of the picture; Main Course was Asian Chicken Salad with cashews and mandarin slices; string beans in a mustard dressing and a hot roll; Desert was Strawberries and homemade chocolate bark–yummm! And all the guests received a goodie bag with a power bar and clementine for a late night snack or breakfast!
Arden was ably assisted by Lynne Kurzweil and Susan Rosenblatt as well as our young team of Zaniah (Arden’s able assistant) and Sarah (Kevin’s daughter.)
The MESH staff of Adrienne, Bonny, Joe and Darren pitched in everywhere! A special moment tonight was at the start–Ted, one of our guests asked if he could say the blessing before the meal. He recited the Motzi perfectly, along with a spot on translation–and the crowd responded with an enthusiastic AMEN!
One more week and we wrap up for the summer, resuming in September. Our teen helpers are busy with end of the school year events and haven’t been able to make it to MESH. Next week we could use some help with serving and cleanup. If you are available please signup: shomrei.org/mesh
About MESH:
The Carol Starr MESH Cafe at Shomrei (Montclair Emergency Services for the Homeless) is a cooperative effort between the MESH organization and local synagogues and churches. Volunteers at each institution cook and serve hearty, nutritious meals for the hungry. Shomrei’s turn is on Tuesday nights. A good meal, and perhaps as important, social interaction and companionship offer respite to those who need it. Please help fulfill this crucial mitzvah by volunteering.
