JLC Shabbaton
This past Shabbat, students in grades 5-7 had the unique opportunity to spend the weekend at the Isabella Freedman Jewish Retreat Center in Falls Village, CT. Thanks to a generous grant from the Greater MetroWest Federation, JLC students departed Montclair on Friday afternoon and enjoyed a Shabbat retreat amidst the serene beauty of the Berkshire Mountains, fully immersed in nature. Accompanied by JLC staff members Sarah Kamenetsky and Orli Pinsberg, as well as Madrichim Eva Halbfinger and Gabe Delaney, the group embarked on a memorable and enriching experience.
The weekend began with a beautiful Kabbalat Shabbat service, followed by a festive dinner and group bonding activities. The rest of Shabbat was filled with inspiring Tefilah, a nature walk around the retreat grounds, a scenic hike, and three delicious meals. The weekend culminated with a heartfelt Havdallah ceremony in the woods, followed by a bonfire where students enjoyed s’mores. The students also shared meaningful words of Torah, reflecting on this week’s parsha.
Under the guidance of the exceptional educators at Isabella Freedman, the Shomrei students had the opportunity to connect deeply with nature, stepping outside their everyday routines and engaging in profound reflection. It’s remarkable how much you can hear, see, smell, and taste when you take a moment to sit in silence, try something new, and spend time with friends in an entirely different setting.
Thank you Isabella Freedman for a transformative Shabbaton.
