Teen MESH Report

After school on Monday, Jordan arrived at the Shomrei kitchen with Seena, Allison and Leila to prepare 50 MESH meals for the following day.

Lynne Kurzweil was there waiting with stations set up to:

  1. Mix the chicken drumsticks with the bbq sauce and place on sheet pans for baking
  2. Prepare the semi-homemade cole slaw and portion into covered cups
  3. Place the corn on the cobs on the baking sheets, spritz with olive oil and add salt and pepper
  4. Wrap each of 50 rolls in plastic wrap
  5. Place 4 Oreos in 50 sandwich bags
  6. Assemble each dinner bag with cole slaw cup, roll, Oreos, tangerine, water bottle, utensil pack.
  7. The chicken and corn were baked in the convection ovens, cooled covered and placed on a big cart in the refrigerator.  The meal bags were placed on another cart and wheeled in the frig, as well.

Our teens quickly completed all tasks, chatting happily about prom, school, etc.

On Tuesday, Lynne and Linda Wieseneck returned to the kitchen to heat up the chicken and corn and pack them into insulated tins.  They also prepared 4 vegan meals which included a jumbo Beyond Burger on a bun with a small cup of bbq sauce, corn cob and roasted carrots, tangerine, Oreos, water and condiment pack.

Lynne brought the 50 meals to The Office where Joe welcomed her with open arms as well as several grateful guests who helped carry in the bags eagerly awaiting the hearty meal that Shomrei is famous for providing.

Shomrei provides 50 meals to MESH on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of each month. We need volunteers to help prepare and pack the food.

For those interested in volunteering who are not available on Tuesday afternoons, we are brainstorming different ways to make it work.  Let us know what would work for you.

Additionally, each Monday afternoon, we deliver any usable food leftover from Kiddish to MESH.

Volunteer at the MESH Site
Volunteers are also welcome to help serve food 6 nights a week, Monday through Saturday, 4:30-6:30 pm at the MESH site, 619 Bloomfield Ave, Montclair.
