Selichot at Shomrei: Soulful Prayers & Reflection, Delicious Food, and Jazz Vibes
As the Jewish New Year peeks around the corner, it’s time to pause, reflect, and reconnect—with ourselves and each other. Selichot is a beautiful tradition of evening prayers that help us gear up spiritually for the High Holidays.
What’s Selichot All About?
Selichot begins the Saturday night before Rosh Hashanah. It’s a moment to say, “Hey, I’m human. I mess up. Let’s do better.” These prayers are full of humility, compassion, and hope—reminding us to be kinder to ourselves and to others.
This year, Shomrei’s Selichot celebration is happening on September 13th from 6:15-9:30pm. It’s not to be missed!
Here’s the activity lineup:
- Mediterranean dinner: shawarma, chicken kebabs, salads, rice, grilled veggies—and pasta options for the kiddos.
- Havdalah ceremony: a beautiful ritual to mark the end of Shabbat. Perfect for children 8 years and up to join this!
- Lively Selichot service: led by Rabbi Julie Roth and a live band (guitar, clarinet, percussion). She will also be accompanied by our guest High Holiday prayer leader, Talia Lakritz, and congregants Debra Caplan and Suzanna Grobman.
- Interactive poster board: Adults and children are asked to reflect on their year and add to our communal board.
- Dessert & jazz: sweet treats and smooth tunes to end the night on a high note.
For younger children, there will be babysitting in the YAC and movie time.
Never been to Selichot? Perfect. Bring a neighbor, a friend, or someone curious. It’s a warm, welcoming space to reflect, sing, eat, and connect. Selichot is about community—lifting each other up and starting the year with intention and love.
Join us for a night of meaning and music. Let’s kick off the New Year with heart and hope.
