News Sources on Israel & the Middle East

Many of us regularly read the NY Times and/or the Washington Post. I find the need to acquire more in-depth Israeli & Middle East news from a broader set of resources. All of the publications I’ve provided below can be accessed free of charge, with the exception of Haaretz.

The following are the most widely read news sources, which can be accessed online:

YNet is the English version of the widely read Israeli Yediot Achronot newspaper. It’s regarded as a mainstream publication reflecting center-to-center-left leanings. ynetnews.com

The Times of Israel covers all of the breaking news in English. It was only established in 2012. It’s a great publication for accurate, breaking news articles. It does not provide in-depth news. TOI is regarded as a centrist outlet that does not affiliate with any party. timesofisrael.com

The Jerusalem Post is a long-established English publication which provides editorial & more in-depth articles. It is regarded as leaning right of center. jpost.com

Haaretz is a well-regarded publication which is distinctively liberal and left-leaning. It is often critical of government policies. Haaretz charges an annual subscription fee. haaretz.com

There are also very informative, Israeli podcasts that I highly recommend. Here are a few:

“For Heaven’s Sake” – the Shalom Hartman podcast hosted by Donniel Hartman and Yossi Klein Halevi. It covers topics affecting Israel, Diaspora relations, the future of Zionism, etc.  The podcast is regarded as centrist-leaning. I highly recommend this week’s topic, entitled: “Election Currents”. You can learn more about the structure of the Israeli government &  elections at Shomrei through a lecture provided by Daniella Gefen on March 15th at 11:30 am (mark your calendars & look out for the signup).

“Ask Haviv Anything” – Haviv Rettig-Gur enlightens listeners with his focus on current events in Israel & the Middle East. Haviv is a nuanced Israeli political analyst known for his deep dives into complex Israeli society and politics. He is positioned as a centrist/ center-right figure. I recommend a recent interview entitled, “Alliances & rivalries in a new Middle East.”

“Israel Story” – hosted by Mishy Harman. Mishy entertains his listeners with extremely unique & compelling topics. My favorite stories are those entitled, “The Wall” part 1–Operation Hulda & “The Wall Part IV–This is My Wall.

Call Me Back – hosted by Dan Senor. This podcast deals with the various crises & dilemmas currently facing mainstream Israelis. Dan tends to lean right of center. His latest episode is entitled, “What’s Trump’s plan with Iran and beyond?”
