Solemn Sacrifice

I knew that the Inca practiced human sacrifice. What I didn’t know prior to our recent trip to Peru was that their sacrifices were of children. And not just any children, but the most beautiful children from well-born families.

The ceremony was called capacocha, “solemn sacrifice”. Parents offered what they most prized – their children – to the mountain gods to ensure water for the harvest and protection against earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and other natural phenomena. The children were brought to the palace in Cusco (the principal city of the Inca empire) and treated like royalty over the course of a year or two. (more…)

Trying to Conserve

peruShomrei is a conservative synagogue. According to Wikipedia, the term “conservative” was meant to signify that Jews should attempt to conserve Jewish tradition, rather than reform or abandon them. The dictionary defines the verb “conserve” as protecting from loss or harm; the verb “reform” as improving by alteration, correction of error, or removal of defect; the verb “abandon” as surrendering one’s interest in.

I thought a lot about “conserving” during our recent trip to Peru. (more…)

Rabbis spoke. Imams spoke. Pastors, ministers, a cardinal spoke. The message was the same.: “Our faith tells us to welcome the stranger. We must follow our faith.”

There are 500,000 undocumented immigrants living in New Jersey – 5.4% of the state’s population – and they are living in fear. No one is safe, even the DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) students that President Trump said would be “treated with heart”. Yet there are two DACA students in our area – one at Rutgers who arrived from the Dominican Republic at age 4 and another at NYU who arrived from Iraq at age 10 – who are under threat of deportation. Passover began about one week early at the MESH Cafe at Shomrei. This past Tuesday night Chef Aileen Grossberg prepared a delicious pesadik meal since the Shomrei kitchen had already been kashered. Except for the egg and garlic matza, I’m sure it was transparent to our guests why this meal was different from all other meals. (more…)
