August Garden Update:  Keeping Shomrei Green Again

Many things happened in Shomrei’s garden during the spring and summer of 2025 to keep the gardens beautiful and productive.

This year’s new blooms started in the fall of 2024, when Shomrei Emunah again received 125 bulbs from May in Montclair.  About ⅔ of the bulbs were daffodils; the rest were red and yellow tulips.  Eliot Fischer and I created a new bed for these bulbs to the left of the main synagogue entrance by the driveway, and then planted the bulbs.  The pachysandra plants that we removed were given to another Montclair gardener who was most appreciative of that ground cover plant. The daffodils and tulips burst into colorful bloom this April and May. (more…)

June Garden Update

Everyone who enters our building must have noticed the greening and flowering of our outdoor landscape. This beautiful lifecycle fuels itself, with one season of plants providing nourishment for the next as its foliage decomposes. In the meantime, our flowers provide beautiful decorations for kiddush tables on Shabbat, and the compost from vegetables and fruit used in kiddush prep helps enrich the soil for all of our plants. The Greening of Shomrei, Parts 2 and 3

Shomrei Emunah took one of its first steps toward becoming a greener community earlier this year, when four small metal compost buckets were purchased for the Shomrei kitchen (See The Greening of Shomrei Part 1). The compost buckets are used as waste containers for vegetable and fruit scraps resulting from Kiddush and MESH meal preparation. Initially, when the metal buckets were full, they were emptied at the outdoor compost bins maintained by Linda Ariel and me on our respective properties. (more…)
