MESH Report 2/12/2019

MESH 2-12Report from Captain Fern Heinig:

It was an icy night but the Carol Starr MESH Cafe was able to open their doors. It was a concern whether staff and volunteers could make it to Shomrei because of the icy roads but everyone made the gallant effort so our guests would have a dry space and nutritious food to eat.

A special Thank You to Kevin for coming into work on a day the building was closed due to weather.

Fern’s friends, Heather, Tracie, and Holly helped along with their daughters Meg, Sienna, and Rhylee. They arrived early to prepare the four course meal and then helped MESH Staff Bonny, Adrienne, Joe and Darren serve our guests.

We had 18 hungry guests. Chef Fern cooked for 30 people and there was not a leftover. Dinner was: Egg Salad as a starter, Minestrone Soup, Honey Chicken,
Mashed Potatoes and Carrots, and Cookies.

Once again, a special note and thank you to the volunteers and professional staff for allowing the Carol Starr MESH Cafe to open. There was no respite Tuesday night, despite the ice storm. Supposedly, the air temperature was above 32 degrees. Garbage bags were offered to help guests stay dry during the night.

Cheers,
Fern

About MESH:

The Carol Starr MESH Cafe at Shomrei (Montclair Emergency Services for the Homeless) is a cooperative effort between the MESH organization and local synagogues and churches.  Volunteers at each institution cook and serve hearty, nutritious meals for the hungry. Shomrei’s turn is on Tuesday nights. A good meal, and perhaps as important, social interaction and companionship offer respite to those who need it. Please help fulfill this crucial mitzvah by volunteering.
