The Carole Starr MESH Cafe at Shomrei was open for business Tuesday night and served thirty meals. We had 24 guests in house and prepared 6 take away meals. Amongst our guests, we had one vegetarian (though he did eat fish) and two of our take aways were non fish vegetarian.

As you can see from the picture of the cooking/serving crew, we had a very large and dedicated crew. We would like to welcome new Shomrei member Jean Thaler, better known as JT. Thank you JT for volunteering and hope your first experience will encourage you to volunteer again.

I love these kids – Jonah, Sienna, Taylor, Mabel, Meg, Maggie, Henry, Hanna and Evan. They thank us for giving them the opportunity to volunteer and two needed to leave early and were upset they could not finish the service. Also thank you to adults Holly, Alana, and Tracie who have become the regular crew.

For dinner, we were able to utilize the leftovers from the Hahn bat mitzvah. Our guests began dinner with an appetizer of a scoop of tuna salad and egg salad. This was followed by green salad. The main was a favorite of our guests, baked salmon with home made tzatziki, accompanied by mashed potatoes and a new MESH dish, a cauliflower souffle. Dessert was fruit salad and brownies.

Our guests were amazingly hungry last night – everything was eaten to the last bite.

The Carol Starr MESH Cafe at Shomrei (Montclair Emergency Services for the Homeless) is a cooperative effort between the MESH organization and local synagogues and churches.  Volunteers at each institution cook and serve hearty, nutritious meals for the hungry. Shomrei’s turn is on Tuesday nights. A good meal, and perhaps as important, social interaction and companionship offer respite to those who need it. Please help fulfill this crucial mitzvah by volunteering.
