MESH Cafe Nov 6, 2018
Report from Captain Aileen Grossberg:
The Carol Starr MESH Cafe at Shomrei had a full house on Election Day 2018. While it might have been contentious outside, at Shomrei and the MESH Cafe it was all quiet conversation and enjoyment of the evening’s dinner.
Cook’s helper and Captain Aileen Grossberg set the mood with a hearty split peas and lima bean soup accompanied by a tossed green salad. Chef Linda Wieseneck prepared a comfort food main dish of perfectly seasoned meatloaf, mashed potatoes, and oven roasted string beans. Homemade brownies with a fresh fruit garnish and a scoop of vegan ice cream concluded the meal.
The menu garnered hearty applause from our 24 eat-in guests. Word must have gotten out about the evening’s meal as we also served 9 take aways on this drizzly evening.
Helping in the kitchen were teens Lewis, Max and Kendall and faithful volunteer Susan Rosenblatt who is also a wiz on the clean-up detail. Todd Wieseneck turned up to lend some moral support to the night’s efforts. The MESH staff of Joe, Bonnie, and Adrienne meshed beautifully as usual keeping the front of the house running smoothly. MSU students Cristina and Sonya accompanied by Dr. Feldman, joined us to do some research about our guests’ likes and dislikes.
Kudos to all for another successful evening at the MESH Cafe.
About MESH:
The Carol Starr MESH Cafe at Shomrei (Montclair Emergency Services for the Homeless) is a cooperative effort between the MESH organization and local synagogues and churches. Volunteers at each institution cook and serve hearty, nutritious meals for the hungry. Shomrei’s turn is on Tuesday nights. A good meal, and perhaps as important, social interaction and companionship offer respite to those who need it. Please help fulfill this crucial mitzvah by volunteering.
