Resilience
editor’s note: on the evening of Dec 29, 2019, the wider Jewish community including area synagogues and Chabad of Montclair, as well as interfaith allies gathered for the lighting of the communal Hanukkiah as an act of solidarity in light of recent attacks on Jews.
RESILIENCE
By Judith Antelman
on a corner in December
in the cold in the rain
we light one candle
we remember
with community & family
with strangers & friends
we light two candles
we remember
arm in arm
hand in hand
we light three candles
we remember
we rejoice
we pray
we light four candles
we remember
we dance
we sing
we light five candles
we remember
tears merge with rain
love replaces pain
we light six candles
we remember
on a corner in December
in the cold in the rain
we light seven candles
we remember
peace.
we light eight candles
we remember
Judith, you certainly captured the evening with such spare language. Thank you.

I was out of town but saw the announcement about the event. Thank you for sharing all the emotions of lighting candles together in a public space.
