Teen MESH April 27-28, 2026

This week we had two phases to our meal prep. On Monday, Shirley Grill met Jordan in the kitchen after school.

Fern Heinig planned the meal and provided a shopping list. Lou Hammerman and Sarita Eisenberg were going to do the shopping, but the Shomrei office staff offered to take care of it.

Here’s Shirley’s report: Teen Monday MESH!

Jordan was solo this week—the others had conflicts. She worked hard to make up for their absence!

Below is the couscous which she created solo—stirred, chopped, and filled 54 cups with delicious vegetable laden couscous. I worked on the chicken which was marinated in a sweet and sour marinade—thus the empty containers of soy sauce and maple syrup.

Full menu:
Roasted chicken parts
Couscous with an array of colorful vegetables (red pepper, cuke, garbanzo beans olives)
Dinner roll
Oreos and home baked cookies
Water

Sarita and Lou joined Lesley Billet on Tuesday afternoon to finish.

Here’s Leslie’s report:

Team 1 left Team 2 in great shape. We finished completing a few bags with all the items, heated up chicken and veggie burgers, and headed out the door.

Leslie delivered the meals to MESH at Union Baptist Church on Midland Ave.

About MESH

Shomrei thanks the Carol Starr MESH Fund for helping to underwrite these meals. MESH (Montclair Emergency Services for Hope) is a community-wide cooperative effort between local synagogues and churches.

Volunteer at Shomrei
Shomrei provides 50 meals to MESH on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of each month. We need volunteers to help prepare and pack the food. For those interested in volunteering who are not available on Tuesday afternoons, we are brainstorming different ways to make it work.  Let us know what would work for you.

Additionally, each Monday afternoon, we deliver any usable food leftover from Kiddish to MESH.

Volunteer at the (Temporary) MESH Site
Volunteers are also welcome to help serve food 6 nights a week, Monday through Saturday, 4:30-6:30 pm at the MESH site. Due to a burst pipe at the MESH site at 619 Bloomfield Ave, MESH will be meeting temporarily at the Union Baptist Church.
