Donate Items in Need – Shomrei Refugee Assistance Group
A few members of our group have begun to develop relationships with two recently resettled Syrian refugee families. Both families are doing well in the United States, but need a few items to help ease their transitions to their new homes.
The needed items are listed here
If you can help, please sign up for items on the list and deliver them to Shomrei, where there is a collection box in the lobby. Please note that you can also use the list to sign up for a monetary contribution that we will use to purchase items on the list.
We will be making periodic deliveries to the families (volunteers are welcome) so we would appreciate that you drop off the items at Shomrei within 10 days of signing up. Please identify the item on the outside of any packaging or wrapping so that we can deliver it to the correct family.
About the families
Family #1
Bara’a, Tamam and their two children, Kresten ( 3 years old) and Riyad (2 years old) are from Homs, Syria. Having arrived in the United States nine months ago, they currently live in a tiny apartment in Elizabeth, NJ. Bara’a and Tamam are expecting their third child in July.
Bara’a was a cook in Syria and has prepared meals for the Syria Supper Club in our area. She has basic literacy skills in English and is eager to learn. Although her pregnancy currently prevents her from attending any ESL programs, she has her very own library card from the Elizabeth Public Library, where she has borrowed books and is looking into programs for the family!
Tamam was a driver in Syria. Because of a medical condition, he is on a one-month leave from his ESL program. He has some basic English skills and also realizes the necessity of learning English to succeed in his new country.
Family #2
Mohammad, and his wife, Hamida live in Elizabeth. They are also from Syria. Mohammad was a cook in Syria and is currently working for a delivery company. Hamida has earned money for the family by cooking at a local Syria Supper Club.
Thank you in advance for your generosity. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions.Regards,
