After two years of development and discussion within our community, the Board of Trustees voted last Thursday to recommend that Shomrei adopt a progressive new “Sustaining Share” system of membership, which would reinvent the way we define and think about synagogue membership. Now it is your turn. At the annual meeting taking place on Wednesday, May 27, the model will be put to a full congregational membership vote.
What is Shomrei considering doing?
Shomrei is considering changing from a one-size-fits-all “dues-paying” membership model to one in which congregants make a voluntary pledge of a contribution of their own choosing. Congregants would be guided by transparent information regarding the amount it takes to sustain the synagogue on a per person basis (the “Sustaining Share”).
In addition to a voluntary financial commitment, congregants would be asked to pledge the number of hours they would be willing to volunteer at the synagogue. Again, they would be guided by information regarding the number of volunteer hours it takes to sustain Shomrei on a per person basis. (more…)
We’re envisioning, we’re dreaming. We’re working hard to explore the core of what we do as a synagogue and make it a more reachable, engaging and inspiring place. Here are some of the initiatives we’ve started to explore. Dream with us! What do we aspire to be as a community?
