The Great Flood – Renovation Update
On Monday, January 8, a pipe burst in the first floor service closet at the rear of the synagogue. The damage to the YAC, Library, and Rabbi’s office was extensive especially to the floors. The water damage lifted the tiles and we discovered that the subfloor tiles contained non-fryable asbestos.
This means the asbestos in the construction material was totally contained in the tiles and had not spread elsewhere. We have tested the air, the walls and other parts of the building and there is absolutely no other asbestos in the building.
While we are only obligated to remove the damaged areas, knowing the remainder of the floors use the same tiles, the board decided to abate the entire school area on the first floor. The work began on Tuesday, January 24 and we estimate that the total repairs will be completed in approximately six weeks. During this time, the Pre School was initially relocated to Cedar Grove and from now until the work is completed will be at Bnai Keshet.
The affected area (flooded part of the building) abatement should be completed this week. The unaffected area (remainder of the school area) will be abated once the movers are able to clear the school area and hopefully work is completed by the end of next week.
We will have access to the upstairs of the building including the sanctuary, kitchen, and social hall, once all the tile is removed. Though our original goal was for February 3, it is not realistic at this time. Please continue to read e-mails letting you know the location of Friday night and Saturday services.
The Purim Carnival and Honors Night will be at Shomrei. Please join our community for both events.
We are grateful to our staff and teachers for their amazing support as well as our neighbors BK and Central Presbyterian for their help. It truly takes a village.
Thank you to everyone for offering to help in whatever way we may need. We will be calling on you.
Fran, thank you for your concise yet detailed and realistic update. I must say that last Saturday morning services in the chapel at Central Presbyterian were quite lovely and the small but artfully presented kiddush after was a great treat.
