Lost in Tel Aviv: In Search of the Perfect Hummus

Secret Tel Aviv listed 2 nearby places as the best hummus in Tel Aviv. We google mapped directions, taking a screen shot to save them since we would not have wifi once we left the hotel.

We easily found place #1 but it was closed; so we followed the directions to place #2.

Did I say that we had saved the directions as a screen shot? That means no corrections if (when) we took a wrong turn. We were at the market in the Yemenite quarter. The last places were closing up for the day. It was very dark. We could not see any street signs. And the street was turning into a stream as shop owners hosed down the sidewalks in front of their stalls.

Finally we stumbled on a better lit street and a bit further on stumbled across a place with tables set up in front. We went in to what looked like a bar. It’s now around 8:15pm – early for dinner by Israeli standards. A woman asked in halting English if we wanted an English menu and if we were going to stay for the show. We answered yes and no. She showed us to a table near a set of drums. Turns out we had stumbled on a jazz club.

I did not find the hummus I was looking for. But I had a wonderful plate of tahini and bread (sorry I neglected to take a picture) and Lou had the best egg sandwich he’d ever eaten (sorry, no picture of that either).

Stomachs taken care of, we had a marvelous time chatting with the band members – four free lance musicians, one from Brooklyn and the other 3 Israelis currently living in Queens – as they set up for a 10 o’clock show and listening to them practice.

We did not stay for the show – too tired after a day traipsing around Jaffa and way past our (Lou’s) bedtime. Our waitress pointed us in the right direction to find a main street and we easily found our way back to the hotel.
